What does a German name generator make?
A German name generator pairs a curated given name (Vorname) with a family name (Familienname or Nachname). This page can also generate either part separately. Style filters shape the given-name pool, while German spelling preserves letters such as ä, ö, ü and ß; ASCII mode converts them to ae, oe, ue and ss.

How German names are structured
The usual display order is given name followed by family name. Multiple given names can exist, but this creative tool returns one given name at a time so results stay easy to read.

The components are established names, but a random pairing does not prove a person's nationality, region, age, religion or family history. Popularity changes over time, and real naming decisions can involve current civil-status rules. Verify historical, genealogical, baby-naming or legal use with the relevant records and authorities.

German name generator: common questions
Direct answers about full names, surnames, old German names, unisex options, spelling, structure and creative use.
How does this German name generator work?
Choose full name, first name or surname; apply gender, style, spelling, starting-letter and count filters; then generate a shuffled batch from curated German name components. Everything runs in your browser.
Can it generate random German full names?
Yes. Select Full name to pair one given name with one surname in the familiar given-name-first display order.
Can I generate only German first names?
Yes. Select First name, then filter by feminine, masculine, unisex, modern, classic or historic style.
Does it work as a German surname generator?
Yes. Select Surname to generate family names independently. Each result includes a short note about a common occupational, descriptive or historical association.
What is the difference between modern, classic and historic names?
Modern prioritizes names used prominently in recent generations, Classic favors enduring twentieth-century and traditional choices, and Historic surfaces older forms. These are creative filters, not exact birth-year claims.
What does von mean in German names?
Von literally means “of” or “from” and can occur in historical noble names, but it should not be added to every German surname. This generator avoids randomly assigning a nobility marker.
Do Germans have middle names?
People can have multiple given names, but a separate English-style middle-name category is not required for the basic given-name and family-name structure. This tool returns one given name for clarity.
Are there unisex German names?
Yes. The curated pool includes names used across gender categories, such as Kim, Robin, Toni and Eike. Actual usage can vary by person, region and generation.
Should I use Müller or Mueller?
Müller preserves German spelling. Mueller is a common character substitution when umlauts are unavailable. Choose German for authenticity on the page or ASCII for systems that cannot accept diacritics.
Can I use generated German names in a story or game?
Yes as a creative starting point. For a specific historical period, region or real-person analogue, verify the combination and social context before publishing.
